Integrity Management Services

HiKen Ltd specialises in high level, integrity management services to the energy sector (oil and gas and renewables).

We get involved in audits and reviews, developing integrity management systems and in expert witness work.  Our experience includes:

  • Downhole materials
  • Seabed facilities
  • Pipelines and flexibles
  • Fixed and floating structures
  • Process plant

We offer a broad range of consultancy services within our specialised fields encompassing the disciplines of civil, structural, marine, materials, corrosion, inspection and underwater engineering.

The net result of our involvement is to optimise cost, maximise safety and to deliver added value to our clients.  We are totally independent of product suppliers and service contractors.

Audits and Reviews

HiKen Ltd typically carries out audits and reviews:

  • prior to a corporate audit (to identify system weaknesses)
  • as part of technical due diligence (pre-asset sale)
  • as a precursor to the development of a revised integrity management system (post sale or if the existing system needs an overhaul)
  • at the behest of the Government regulator (due to changing legislation or in response to a health and safety initiative)
  • to provide an independent ‘sense check’ to ensure the current system is fit for purpose

The scope is client/job specific and may include:

  • a technical review of integrity management system documentation
  • interviews with key staff
  • a compliance check
  • discrete engineering analyses
  • fitness for purpose assessment
  • an audit of the inspection records system

The report deliverable summarises the work carried with recommendations for improvements to assure the technical well-being of the asset for the remaining field life.

At job start, HiKen provides a data list to initiate the audit/review process.  Note that the work can be carried out remotely, by telephone and email communication, in cases where distances/cost of travel is prohibitive.

Developing Integrity Management Systems

HiKen Ltd is involved throughout a project’s life cycle from conceptual design through to final decommissioning.  We have specialist knowledge of risk based inspection methods applied on an international basis.

Integrity Management Systems can be developed during the design phase for new builds, else during field life for existing facilities.  The plans need to be revised during decommissioning particularly where the decommissioning is phased over a period of years or the facilities are mothballed until some date in the future.

A typical integrity management system comprises a series of levels:

Level 1
Strategy/philosophy document setting the overall direction of the integrity and inspection service; includes roles and responsibilities, data and document management and audit/review requirements.

Level 2
Consists of documents and systems mainly concerned with the planning and control of the integrity and inspection service; thus plans, methodologies, written schemes, data management specifications, budgets and analysis/review reports.

Level 3
Includes details about the execution of service – workpacks, tender specifications and procedures.

Level 4
Contains physical data records; the results of inspection, monitoring, failures or other significant events associated with the asset integrity.

HiKen Ltd can design and develop the complete system else prepare discrete parts e.g. create a written scheme of examination or develop high level technical specifications that set the client standard for inspection regardless of contractor.  It is important that a client sets the level of inspection which then acts as a benchmark, as several different inspection contractors may be engaged during the life of an asset.  Also there may be as many as 10 or 12 different client integrity engineers appointed during asset life; the typical tenure for an integrity management engineer on a given asset being about 3 years.

Asset facilities include onshore, offshore, topsides and underwater.  Note our experience on pipelines includes assessing both the internal and external risks; very often it is either just one or the other.

Expert Witness

When things go wrong, we have expert witness experience and can provide an impartial opinion or factual information based on our areas of competence and expertise.  This includes requesting and examining evidence, writing clear and concise reports and attending hearings.
